they were calling in to say they were taking on water and they were off 65 miles from pillar point along the san mateo coastline. onboard were two adults and two children. neither older than 7 years old. about 50 minutes later, this is around 5:30, they radioed in to say they were abandoning ship. the coast guard is sure they didn't have a life raft or survival suit but not sure if they had life jackets. to give you an idea of some of the assets the coast guard dedicated to this search. an 87-foot patrol boat, a helicopter out of coast guard san francisco, a c-130 out of coast guard sacramento and 47-foot lifeboat out of coast guard station monterey. today they might also be sending out 210-foot cutter as well as air national rescue wing out of

moffett field that's supposed to help out and as i mentioned, later this morning at 6:45 they'll launch a chopper out of sfo to go back out there to try to find these four people. they have not indicated what the relationship is between the two adults and two children. part of the problem is the distress call was garbled. if you are watching and you know the boat and can call the coast guard to tell them you know who these people are to give them more information as far as where this boat was headed and where it was leaving from, they would much appreciate it. reporting live here, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> this morning in a separate search, the search for a missing bay area couple in peru is now intensifying. the u.s. state department now joining the effort to locate the pair who were last heard from a month ago during a biking trip. "today in the bay's" christie smith is live right now where one of the missing cyclists worked. she has details on the search

effort. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, jon. a growing sense of urgency among family and friends. they were last seen and heard from in peru about a month ago. a 27-year-old jamie neal worked at this bike shop for the past two years. inside the shop there are flyers up about neal and her 25-year-old boyfriend, garrett hand. the pair set off on a world wind bike trip, an adventure they have been chronicling on facebook. the posts stopped on january 25th in peru. that's the last time anyone heard from them. the bike shop here, friends are worried. >> i'm extremely concerned. i'm very fearful that something bad has happened and it's not likely that -- it's not as likely that they are just out on an excursion away from internet access. they had been using the internet

and skype and facebook, you know, all that stuff to stay in contact and that contact has ceased. >> reporter: friends tell us they just want to know that the pair is safe. the state department issued a travel warning this month about a group possibly planning to kidnap american tourists in the region. the bike shop has posted information about the couple online, on travel groups, anywhere he can. of course the state department and u.s. embassy in peru helping out now with the search. reporting live, christie smith, "today in the bay." it's 5:05 now. we have new details on a carjacking that left a wild scene at a shopping center in union city. it began in fremont yesterday afternoon where police went after a stolen mercedes-benz. the chase ended at union city's union landing shopping center when the suspects hit a tree. the mercedes smashed into a

white nissan where a woman was sitting inside. she was taken to the hospital. the stolen car kept going slamming into five other parked cars. the owner of one of the damaged vehicles had no idea his car was involved in all this. >> the person that committed this crime by hijacking the gentleman's mercedes, caused this mess while we were just enjoying our sunday. >> fremont police later found and arrested two teenagers, a man and woman, both 18 years old. following last week's sit in, five city college of san francisco students will get their meeting with the chancellor sometime today. a few dozen students occupied a campus building thursday into friday demanding an audience with the school's chancellor. the school made massive cuts in an effort to keep accreditation. students say they would like a say in those cuts and they will be speaking with the chancellor this morning and then hold a news conference after their hookup. >> good morning to you. it's 5:06. get ready for more of the same,

looking at it. you know how it goes at our house. east shore freeway west 80 moves smoothly. that's probably why the kids were going crazy going to sleep last night. at powell earlier crash cleared and no problems for both directions off the berkeley curve we see slowing in each direction because the volume is starting to pick up a bit. down the east shore freeway out of richmond, no problems off richmond bridge although it slows. slowing near the caldecott. southbound 680 toward contra costa out of pleasant hill we do have one disabled vehicle partially blocking a lane there. should be in final clearing stages as we speak. looking at the construction bringing it down to one lane east 580 but west 580 now word of a stall there as well. sounds like a car is on the shoulder. this could get more complicated but right now it's just on the shoulder. i'll track it. send it back to you. >> thank you, mike. 5:08. coming up, olympic skier lindsey

administration decision to lift the ban on women in combat opens the door for mandatory draft registration. men 18 to 25 are already required to register. experts say while it's extremely unlikely the draft requirements will change any time soon, legally there may be no other choice. another step toward expansion happening today for facebook as the social media giant spreads architecture footprint. the menlo park planning commission meeting today discussing the company's plan for a second campus on the west side of bay front expressway. facebook needs the city to rezone the 22 acres to green light building the new campus. right now the height for buildings is 35 feet. facebook has plans going as high as 73 feet into the sky. campuses are breaking out all over. scott mcgrew, the world got a look at the google campus over the weekend. >> that's right. "vanity fair" got a look.

it's 42 acres, more than a million square feet of office space. google's main headquarters is on old sgi campus if you've been around long enough to remember that. google has broke ground on this new campus. to add to that, we have a campus on the upper right-hand side of your screen announced last week. more than a million square feet. that's going to be in santa clara and then at the bottom you have the mother ship. the granddaddy of them all. apple's new campus. construction alone there expected to cost a half billion dollars and you thought you had a big mortgage. it would take apple less than a week to pay that off except the company has 274 times that much money in the bank. let's turn to bertha coombs this morning. she's at cnbc word headquarters. good morning, bertha. >> a problem with apple's cash is a lot is overseas and we know issues with taxes. we have futures higher this morning. lowe's reporting better than

expected earnings. barnes and noble higher. the markets off a mixed week. dow managing to close higher. nasdaq fell for second straight week and broader s&p 500 snapping a seven-week winning streak. no economic data on tap today. investors will keep a close eye on washington this week as fed chairman ben bernanke testifies twice about the economy on the hill. the dow rising 120 points on friday to that 14,000 level while the nasdaq added 30 to 3161. back over to you, scott. >> thank you. the board of directors at hewlett packard are a source of constant intrigue. a group of big shareholders said they've had enough and are asking for three of the board not to run for re-election. "the wall street journal" says the board members will meet with dissatisfied investors this morning in washington. that includes, by the way, the california retirement system in that group.

temperatures climbing by 30 degrees from where they are right now. the winds are going to play a factor just as they did on friday. so as we stop the clock for you on future cast you can see the coastline will get gusty winds again today. gusts in excess of 40 miles per hour. that means you want to tie down loose objects at your home if you left them out. we're looking nice and mild. 66 in concord. 65 in gilroy. as we head throughout the rest of the week, temperatures keep climbing. gradual warmup kicks in as we head through friday. we'll jump from 69 degrees on friday eve thursday to 73 degrees on friday. that means plan that barbecue. i'm coming over. >> definitely right on. will have to clean it, i guess. scrape, scrape. looking over here toward the eastbound traffic, the construction crews should be clearing from greenville road. that's good news. bad news is because we're getting ready for morning commute. you see that kicking in westbound. slowing now heading over the

altamont pass. earlier breakdown with that vehicle cleared from west 580 around greenville itself. that's good news. we're getting more crowded situation. we don't need distractions. a smooth drive through livermore, pleasanton and south 680 down into the sunol area. continuing down into the south bay you have construction still over at the washington/irvington exit for 680. into the south bay itself, no problems. you see yellow streaks southbound for 101 and 880 showing up speeds only to about 60. not a concern. light volume of traffic. no other incidents through area. 101 follow it up through palo alto along the peninsula. you see the volume of traffic here northbound with the taillights past willow continuing into san mateo and into san francisco. easy drive both directions for 101. 280 at the limit as you would expect. we'll check across the bay as well. we'll look at the bay bridge. this is folks out of san francisco and lower deck clear and easy drive. early morning accident over at treasure island clearing long ago and no further repercussions. westbound starting to pick up volume on incline as well.

things are moving smoothly. no backup at the toll plaza. this isn't the clearest view we've had. it's good enough for driving. back to you. >> thanks so much. 5:18. raiders defensive tackle desmond bryant is in trouble with the law. he was arrested yesterday morning in florida for misdemeanor criminal mischief. the chronicle reports bryant allegedly went to a neighbor's home intoxicated and caused a commotion. he has played with the raiders for four years but is scheduled to be a free agent next month. and on the ice the shark's ryane clowe has a meeting with the nhl today. he was not allowed to play in saturday's game against president stars because of the pending hearing. the sharks by the way not good lately. they lost on saturday night and they have lost nine of their last ten games. california lawmakers want to stop pro athletes from getting

big payouts from the state. according to "the los angeles times," the state has paid an estimate $747 million in benefits for job related injuries to pro athletes like football players, most of whom play for out of state teams. the funds come from the employer funded workers compensation program. state legislators are working on a new law that would protect california from getting hit with claims from out of state players. >> intriguing news. 5:20 right now. this morning on "today," olympic skier lindsey vonn talks about her recovery. she says that after tearing up her knees, rehab going very well. so well in fact she hopes to be strong enough to compete come this november. that would be a strong return. she tells the "today" show's matt lauer she knew the exact moment she was in trouble. >> and my knee just completely

garcia-cannon. >> i'm jon kelley. a very good morning to one and all. happening right now, coast guard crews continue their search for a group of four people lost at sea including two children. with frigid temperatures overnight, the search now growing more desperate. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live at the coast guard station with all of the latest details. bob, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, jon. coast guard sector san francisco is directing the search, which is taking place right now as i speak off the san mateo coastline. there's a c-130 and 87-foot patrol boat looking for these two adults and two young children under 8 years of age who are lost at sea. 210-foot cutter is about to arrive on the scene if not already. and then at sun up, the coast guard will send out another chopper. one of the adults onboard that missing vessel radioed in a broken up distress call at 4:20

yesterday afternoon to alert them of their sailboat taking on water. at 5:30, about 50 minutes later, they radioed in they were abandononi abandoning ship. >> we know they did not have a life raft onboard and we're not sure if they had life jackets or not. we're very concerned about it. that's why we keep our assets out there all night. >> reporter: the coast guard tells us the conditions last night were not good. the water cold. the wind gail force. because the distress call was broken up, the coast guard is not sure about that 29-foot sailboat's name. it could be charm blow or something to that effect. that's why they would like anyone familiar with that boat to contact them to let them know who these people are, where they're coming from and where

they were headed. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." las vegas police identified the man they say shot an oakland rapper as he was driving down las vegas boulevard last week. officers say 26-year-old ammar harris is armed and dangerous. his arrest record including kidnapping, robbery and sexual assault. on thursday morning harris was driving a black range rover on the las vegas strip when he shot at oakland rapper kenny "clutch" cherry. cherry was hit in the maserati he was driving crashed into a taxi that exploded killing the driver and a passenger inside. police found harris' suv a few blocks away on saturday. this morning the alameda county coroner's office working to identify a body pulled out of the water at jack london square. firefighters pulled that person out yesterday afternoon but at this hour still remains a mystery who the individual is and how they got there.

witnesses say it was spotted near the shore about 2:00 yesterday afternoon. if you do know anything about this incident, you are asked to please call police. friends and family of a missing bay area couple are not giving up hope the pair will be found alive and well. the couple vanished last month while bicycling through peru. "today in the bay's" christie smith is live in the east bay with more details on this search effort. good morning, christie. >> reporter: good morning to you, marla. friends are reaching out to people here in the bay area and to anyone who may have contacts in peru. the last time anyone heard from this couple was about a month ago and friends are saying they wouldn't just disappear on their own. now jamie neal worked at the peddler bike shop here and was on extended vacation from the shop. she and her boyfriend, garrett hand, set off on a biking trip of a lifetime. a five-month adventure they have been chronicling on facebook since last november. the posts suddenly stopped on

january 25th in cusco, peru. concern is growing. a bus security camera captured images of the pair getting off a bus and into taxi in lima. >> i want them to both know that we're looking for them and we want them to contact us and reach out to us and tell us that they're okay and we want them to return on time and safe. >> reporter: neal has worked at the bike shop here for about two years. her friends say it's even more upsetting since the state department issued a travel warning this month about a group possibly planning to kidnap american tourists in the cusco, peru, region. the u.s. embassy in lima are helping out with the search. reporting live, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thank you, christie. it's 5:35. let's check back in with meteorologist christina loren for more good news on a beautiful day ahead on this monday. >> good morning to you. not just today, jon and marla. all week.

in the bay," at least mike is here to finish you off. >> just hang around. just another 90 minutes is all we ask. we're looking here at 5:36. backup at the toll plaza. heavier volume of traffic expected around the bay this week. it was just south bay schools that had major break last week from school. we saw a shift in traffic around the bay. we're seeing an earlier backup at the toll plaza in the cash lanes. we'll look down the east shore freeway at the approach with folks coming out of richmond in toward berkeley with headlights. good spacing. at the limit but pretty crowded. we'll look at the maps. you'll see that the arrow pointing to the same area we showed you with the live camera. there will be slowing coming around the berkeley curve and toward that westbound upper deck. we have westbound 580 with slowing through livermore bogging down around airway but also at the dublin interchange and coming out of the altamont pass. that's to be expected. eastbound you have road crews blocking all but one lane in the eastbound noncommute direction causing unexpected slowing. plan for that past greenville.

crews should move in the next half hour. back to you. speaking of word on the street this morning, good news, bad news deals. the city of san jose says it's working on a plan to fix bad roads out there. on the downside, taxpayers will likely flip the bill. the city says nearly a quarter of its roadways are in poor condition by 2020 every road would be in that category. city leaders say they are proposing a series of taxes to help increase funding for road work. the possible taxes include a quarter or a half cent sales tax increase as well as a bond measure that would cost the average homeowner about $100 a year. >> 5:38. with spending cuts looming, the white house now announcing what it will mean for california's funding. and practically a done deal. the big name player you may guess from the video niners may soon be trading.

california governor jerry brown is attending an emergency meeting at the white house over looming spending cuts. he'll join other state leaders in meetings hosted by president obama. the cuts would affect federal aid to california. mr. obama is calling on governors from both parties to work with him on finding a compromise budget. lawmakers return from break today and they have only four days to come up with a deal to avoid drastic spending cuts that would hit california very hard. prai tracie potts is live on capitol hill this morning. the question is what's the vibe out there? do you feel they'll beat that friday deadline? >> can they? yes. will they? the sense here is there just isn't a lot going on publicly or behind the scenes to move toward a compromise before friday. some are saying after friday when cuts are a reality, we'll

see more momentum and urgency but for now what we've got is the white house putting out new numbers on what they think the impact of these cuts will be. you were talking about california being a prime example of that. and republicans saying they think the numbers are grossly exaggerated and that we don't have to see those cuts have such a devastating impact on the middle class. >> of course a lot of people will be affected by this if it in fact kicks in. for california, what does that mean for the state out here if the cuts do take place? >> we want to give you a rundown of what the white house is saying the impact could be especially on education. that's one of the big areas. $87 million in losses to schools in california. almost 63 for special education. plus, cuts to financial aid and work study for college students. head start as well. we're talking about thousands of students who could be impacted by this according to the white house report. public safety would also take a hit. 1.6 million in grants that cover

things like courts and victim services, witness services, and crime prevention. all of that could be lost if we see these cuts happen. a number of other areas including the military and that's a big one. lots of furloughs expected there. the environment job training, public health, senior meals, domestic violence, you name it. federal money lost to california come friday if congress can't work it out. >> major stuff we're talking about. we'll keep our fingers crossed and hope something gets done. thank you very much. you can call it a bizarre strange twist in the oscar pistorius' case. pistorius' attorney says the olympians brother is facing homicide charges from a 2008 crash that killed a motorcyclist. carl pistorius who sat behind his younger brother, oscar, every day at his bail hearing will now face his own homicide trial for this incident that happened five years ago. carl quietly appeared in court on thursday. that was just one day before his

brother was released on bail. his next appearance is scheduled for the end of march. it's 5:43 right now. oil giant bp may be forced to pay billions of dollars more for its role in one of america's worst ever oil spills. bp in court today to face a civil trial brought by several gulf states affected by that major, massive 2010 spill. the trial aimed at finding the cause of the oil rig explosion that ultimately killed 11 people. it also spilled millions of barrels of crude, which polluted the gulf of mexico. bp has already agreed to pay $5.5 billion settlement of federal criminal charges. good morning to you. it's 5:44. monday begins with a full moon and another nice forecast for us. >> beautiful stuff. in fact, the kind of stuff that you wish for when it's raining and cold in the bay area. you know it's just around the corner. taking a live look at a spectacular start to the day over san francisco.

you've held on long enough. you got through the cold snap last week. you deserve 70s this week. some cities getting close to the 80s as we kick off the weekend. we're going to talk about that in your seven-day outlook in just a moment. we can't stay on this shot long enough. just beautiful. i want to show you that picture because we do have fog trying to develop out there. really not able to because the winds are so strong this morning. so those winds will play a factor in today's forecast. building breeze at the coast. not any thick fog this morning. good news for the morning drive. it will guest gusty over open water bridges. 34 degrees at napa right now. 44 in san francisco. and 38 degrees to start the day in sunnyvale living up to that name fully today. we have a lot of sunshine on tap as high pressure builds in. driving winds offshore. pushing that marine layer way back up to sea and we'll continue this warmup all of the way through friday. winds will pick up thursday and

friday and those will be warmest days of the week. mid 70s on the way. today not too shabby. mid 60s. 66 degrees in livermore. 64 for fremont. 63 in san francisco. i want to draw your attention to thursday and friday jump in those numbers into 60s to mid 70s. we'll hold onto that warmth for saturday. make those beach plans but plan on extra traffic over 17. let's check on where the traffic is developing right now with mike. >> it's monday. monday after we've had major break. i know south bay schools but still we see more traffic flow at the bay bridge. part of the reason, look at this. just these lanes between hov lanes and fastrak lanes. this may be related to early morning where we saw a backup that not all of the toll lanes were open. that may be the case. stay to the right as you approach. that side of the freeway is moving smoothly toward the toll plaza. again, back up and heavier volume showing up here. aside from at the toll plaza, no drama for the east bay maze. we'll take you to the backup for 580 westbound coming into livermore out of the altamont pass.

you see folks starting to build here toward north livermore and continuing into the dublin interchange. holding steady for 680 south through pleasanton and into sunol over the hill into fremont without problems for 680. nice drive here north 101 starting that first burst we typically see. it will back up a bit. 6:15, another slow drive from 680 up toward the airport. that will stick in. 87 showing more traffic as well. again, those south bay schools back in after a lot of them had a winter break. everything except for here should be a lot heavier. north 280 from 680 you have metering lights. we'll see how the difference plays out. it's been holding steady until 880 interchange and then jams into cupertino. 880 moving south picking up volume. no slowing south of dumbarton bridge. palo alto heading up toward the dumbarton bridge a nice flow northbound with taillights but southbound also picking up a good volume. no slowing through san mateo, palo alto or into the south bay and we'll end with this shot and
